Q: What is the 'Barnardians Reconnected' website all about?

A: Barnardians Reconnected brings together all members of the Barnardian family into one online space where the latest news, events and initiatives are shared. Read more about the website here >>


Q: How can we all keep in touch?

A: The Barnardians Reconnected website is the first step in maintaining your Barney links - providing a secure and Barney-focused platform for getting back in touch and storing your latest contact details. Additionally, why not come along to a future event or volunteer to run a local group or hold a pub night? View online for ways you can support the School and wider OB network >>

Q: Are all former pupils registered on the Member Directory?

A: The majority of all living former pupils are listed in the Directory and we are working hard to plug gaps. Where known, former pupils now deceased are marked accordingly.

Q: How can I get involved - do I have to register?

A: The current Barnardians Reconnected website is a redevelopment of the former underperforming OB website. OBs are invited to register their details online which will allow us to check information against details already held. Invite a fellow OB to register [login required] >>

Q: How is my data kept secure?

A: Data held in your Personal Profile is kept strictly in accordance with the Data Protection Act 1988 and the Yourmembership.com platform is Safe Harbor certified. Additionally the site is password protected with all passwords being hashed, and on a personal preference level, each individual member can select what to show on the searchable member directory.

Q: Why is keeping in touch important?

A: Maintaining links with your peers, your classmates and the School is an important way to ensure you remain not only connected to like-minded people with whom you share a common past, but have the potential to connect with people with whom you could potentially share a mutually beneficial future. Basically it's a great way to keep in touch with friends that will last a lifetime!

 

Q: Why not simply have a Facebook page for all Barney OBs?

A: Social platforms such as Facebook and Twitter are great for keeping in touch and the School is active on a number of social platforms. However, whereas not everyone in the Barney community may be on Facebook or similar, all former pupils will be listed on Barnardians Reconnected. As a Barney-dedicated platform you can be assured of the latest news, events and initiatives. BR also provides the ability to search by combinations of member criteria - something that is simply not possible on other sites.

 

Q: How will the Member Directory improve over time?

A: The Development Office works hard to improve the quality of Old Barnardian data. This will be achieved a number of ways - by encouraging members to update their personal profile themselves, through collecting latest occupation data via event registrations, canvassing personal data through direct approaches or viewing data as featured on 3rd party social platform eg: LinkedIn. In the case of the latter, permission to hold latest details will be sought direct from the alumnus/na.

Using the Member Directory

Q: Can I personalise what is featured in the Member Directory?

A: Yes. Each member has the ability to populate their Personal Profile with personal, professional and affinity-related data. Some data fields are mandatory as they are vital to the working of the Directory and will always be shown eg: School years. Other fields are optional - optional to complete, as well as optional to share with others. Simply toggle the security button at the side of the relevant field to select your visibility preference. This will result in this particular field being visibility or hidden when your profile is viewed in a Directory search.

 

Q: Why am I only able to see part of a postal address for members I locate in the Directory?

A: While wishing to maintain the searchability of the Directory, we have launched the platform respecting the privacy of our members. What this means is that where an address is held, only non-unique postal address fields have been disclosed with fields such as house number and postcode hidden. Members who wish to can disclose additional fields through amending their Personal Profile. Equally all members have the ability to hide all fields of their postal address - work or home. 

 

Q: Sometimes I can see an email address in a member profile , other times I can't - why is this?

A: Not all members wish to publicly share an email address. While not always definitive, it is a good indication of whether this person is active on Barnardians Reconnected and whether by sending them a message, you will get a response.


Q: What influences the number of returns I get when I search by a certain criteria eg: organisation sector or profession?

A: All available fields are populated by data each individual member submits and is happy to share. It may be that the Development Office can view more information than the member is wishing to share online.

Q: What constitutes a 'Friend' on the member directory?

A: Supporters associated with the School who don't fall into any other category of Member Type eg: Old Barnardian or Former Staff. A Friend may include a School Governor for example.

 

Q: I'm organising a reunion, how can I get in touch with friends?

A: The Directory can be searched by year group, School House and several other criteria that may form the basis of your reunion group. For those individuals who fall outside a generic search you can search individuals by name and add them to your 'Favourites'.  Simply search for the person and select the 'Favourite star' located top right of their profile. Your 'Favourites' can be viewed under your 'My Profile' area.

 

 

News and Events

Q: How can I keep up to date?

A: Latest news and events are featured publically online. For more private content (for Barney eyes only) you may be invited to log in to the website. 

 

Q: Can I book events online?

A: Wherever possible we look to set up the booking of our events online. We hope to introduce the facility for taking payment online in the future too, although in the meanwhile for those events where a fee is charged you will need to telephone the Office or return a payment form. We will also be introducing an online attendee list for events, so registrants can see who has signed up to each event.

 

Q: Can I submit a story, feature or news snippet?

A: We welcome all contributions. Stories, features or snippets will feature in one or all of our current communication channels  - the regular e-bulletin, OB Magazine or online news section. Submit your story, feature or news snippet today - photos particularly welcomed! >>
